Understanding Surrogate Compensation in California

One of the most common questions we receive is about surrogate compensation. While the desire to help others is the primary motivation for most surrogates, fair compensation for your time, effort, and the physical demands of pregnancy is important.

Base Compensation

In California, surrogate base compensation typically ranges from:

  • First-time surrogates: $60,000 - $80,000 + incentives
  • Experienced surrogates: $80,000 - $100,000+

Additional Benefits

Beyond base pay, surrogates receive:

  • Monthly allowance: $200-$300 for pregnancy-related expenses
  • Maternity clothing allowance: $500-$1,000
  • Embryo transfer fee: $1,000 per transfer
  • Multiple pregnancy bonus: Additional compensation for twins
  • C-section fee: $2,500-$5,000 if required

Covered Expenses

Intended parents also cover:

  • All medical expenses and insurance
  • Legal fees
  • Travel expenses for appointments
  • Lost wages for appointments and recovery
  • Childcare during appointments

Payment Schedule

Compensation is typically paid monthly throughout the pregnancy, with the base amount divided into equal installments after confirmation of pregnancy.
